Removing contact lenses

As with inserting lenses, follow above instructions regarding washing and drying hands. There are two main methods for contact lens removal. The first involves holding the top eyelid open and pinching the lens with opposing digits. However, this can cause eye damage and irritation and is generally discouraged.

In the second method, the lens is moved off the surface of the cornea which – due to the difference in curvature – makes it buckle and lose adhesion to the eye’s surface. It can then be removed easily. Hold open the top eyelid with the middle and ring fingers of your non-dominant hand, and the bottom with the middle and ring fingers of your dominant hand. Place your dominant index finger on the contact lenses and hold it there. Look towards your nose and the contact lens should move to the white part of your eye and crumple. Alternatively, put your index finger on the contact lenses and slide it down into the white part of your eye above your bottom eyelid, which should have the same effect.
